Do you ever have your students use the dictionary during school? If you answered yes then I am sure you have heard, “Miss so and so that word isn’t in the dictionary.” You, being the teacher, obviously know this is untrue and when you go to help them you realize they aren’t even on the right page. This happens more often than I would like to admit. My students do not know how to use the dictionary. It is something that I spend time teaching them. Of course there are online dictionaries which are great, but unfortunately we don’t have enough computers in my classroom to have a student run to the computer every time they need to look up a word. I also personally feel that dictionary skills are important and something students should know. I created this packet for use in the classroom. It teaches some basic skills. Students will look up definitions to find the answers to the questions.
There are a few pages on alphabetical order, which is obviously important when navigating a dictionary.
