Read About Fall
We read 5 books about fall for our preschool fall unit. For each of the books, we did 5 reading lessons, one for each day of the week.
We began the fall unit by reading Leif and the Fall and discussing concepts of print. We talked about important things the book tells us—for example, the title, author, illustrator, etc. The students then cut and pasted the important parts of a book into the correct spots.
We moved on to vocabulary next by reading the book Let’s Look at Fall. After reading the book aloud we matched the vocabulary words to the pictures and read the definitions. We glued the vocabulary words above the pictures and colored them in.
Our midweek reading activity was to make predictions. To make predictions I held up the book Scarecrow by Cynthia Rylant and asked the students what they thought the book would be about. Then I read the title and we took a picture walk through the book. After I asked if their predictions changed. Finally, we read the book and when we finished we talked about whether our predictions were correct or not.
We worked on our retelling skills after reading We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt. Students cut out the images from the retelling sheet and pasted them in the correct order to retell the story.
Our final reading activity for the preschool fall unit was our “F” emergent readers. The kids read the words on the page and pointed to each word as they read. There are two versions of this reader for differentiation.
Preschool Fall-Themed Literacy Activities
The first literacy activity that we did in our preschool fall unit focused on letter recognition and matching. The students flipped a leaf card, said the letter, and found the matching letter on their worksheet. They had to color the leaf the same color as the leaf card.
Next, we worked on letter F worksheets. There were 3 different activities to choose from. We had a bingo marker letter F worksheet. This is where students used a bingo marker to form an upper and lower-case letter F on the paper. A dot the letter F worksheet where students use a bingo marker to dot the letter f only leaving all other letters blanks. The final worksheet focused on beginning word sounds. Students colored in the pictures of the letters that began with F.
I grabbed a pack of bingo markers off Amazon and had my kids pick out their favorite colors. I use these for a lot of different activities so they are great to have on hand.
Our next literacy activity worked on letter formation. For this activity, I grabbed a small bin, some small multi-colored pom poms, and the letter cards from the match and color activity. Students took their time forming the letters on the cards in the pom poms. This is a great sensory activity. If you’re looking for the perfect bin for these kinds of activities check out simple pencil boxes. They are small, have lids, and are easy to store away for use later.
The fourth literacy activity for the week was beginning sound clip cards. These fall-themed preschool words were printed on cards with 3 letters on the side. Students said the words out loud and clipped the correct sound for each word.
Our final literacy activity in our preschool fall unit was our fall-themed syllable sort. Students looked at the picture cards and sorted the words in to 1, 2, or 3-syllable words.
Fall Math Activities
The first math activity we completed in our preschool fall unit was counting trees. These are the perfect fine motor and counting activity. The students say the number at the top of the card and then count out the correct number of objects to place them in the spaces on the tree. The numbers 0-10 are included. Students could also use modeling dough to create small balls to squish as they place on the trees for this activity.
Next, we worked on spotting similarities and differences. Students had to look at a row with 4 objects in it and find the object that did not match the rest.
Our next focus was patterns. we did AB and ABC patterns. The kids also practiced cutting and pasting within this activity.
We moved back to numbers and fine motor skills with counting clip cards. These cards focused on numbers 0-10; students counted the number of leaves on the trees and clipped the number.
The final math activity in our preschool fall unit was ten frames. There are cards for 1-10 and students traced the number, counted the objects on the card, and used the pom poms to place in the ten frame. I laminated these to be used year after year.
Fall Sensory, Science, and Social
I set up our sensory bin for the week for our preschool fall unit. I used dried white beans. I put these cute leaves and acorns that I found on Amazon. I also got these cute wooden scoops that the kids can scoop the materials with.
Next, we went outside for a fall scavenger hunt. The kids took clipboards and pencils and checked off the things that we observed.
We mixed art and math next with our fingerprint trees. I took fall-color ink pads and had the kids use their fingerprints as the leaves. They had a lot of fun with this. I kept baby wipes nearby to wipe before moving on to the next color to prevent mixing. The numbers 1-10 are included.
Next, we went on a leaf hunt. After we read the book We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt I took the kids outside to collect leaves. We are going to use these leaves for our leaf rubbings.
For our final activity in our preschool fall unit, we used the leaves from our leaf hunt and made rubbing drawings. The kids loved seeing the leaves form on the paper as they rubbed them with crayons.
I hope you enjoyed these fall preschool activities you can grab everything here in my fall preschool unit.
